Stress in the Body

Aug 24, 2022

Much of what I work on with my clients is based on stress relief. Whether that's stress from a current situation, stress from past events, or stress caused by our current lifestyle,  it all boils down to a lack of peace in the body, mind, and soul.

We hear so much these days about self-care,  work-life balance, and wellness it's easy to forget that each of these is more than just buzz words.

A stress response from the body can be a good thing. This is your fight or flight response. This is the mechanism in the body that helps you to fight a virus, shiver when you're cold, and run from the saber tooth tiger to save your life. We certainly want those things to keep happening. The difference between these scenarios and the kind of stress most of us endure is that each of those scenarios is short-lived. Here and gone in a matter of weeks. Your work stress likely isn't that way.

That is where we run into problems and why there is so much talk about decreasing your stress levels. This isn't just a "new industry"; the effects of long-term stress on the body have been studied for years.

According to Mayo Clinic stress can cause headaches, muscle tension, chest pain, fatigue, stomach upset,  sex drive disturbances, anxiety, Restlessness, Irritability, anger, lack of motivation, overwhelm, sadness, depression, overeating/undereating, and even social withdrawal. Yikes!

Did you know that stress can also cause difficulty breathing, higher blood pressure, and increased risk for heart disease? It can alter your gut health, leading to increased inflammation in the body too. It's true my friend. The effects of stress on your body is so much more than just the desire to kick your feet up with a glass of wine at the end of the day.

This is why it's so important to take care of yourself. You see,  stress isn't just an emotion. It isn't just uncomfortable. Continued periods of stress lead to a cascade of physical, mental,  and emotional changes in the body, and none of them are positive ones!

If you've ever heard of someone working on their self-development, valuing self-care,  or trying a new stress relief method and thought to yourself,  "eh, I don't need that" yet you suffer from any of the ailments listed above… you do need it.  You need it if you spend more of your day feeling in over your head than like you've got it all together.  You need it if you dread interaction with a Co-worker or family member.  You need it if you physically suffer due to your stress.  You need it if you mentally suffer from stress.  You need it if you emotionally suffer from stress.

You need it if you value your complete wellness. If this is you, it's time to work on reducing your stress! I'd love to help you out with this. Let's talk about how we can do that,  find a time to chat with me here.
